An open and honest look at the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System.
A Review of the Aston, PA office
Published on April 6, 2008 By Kid Local In Home Improvement

Donna, my wife, and I have discussed having our basement finished for two years.  We own a modest three bedroom home in the Philadelphia Suburbs that has grown cramped with the addition of our third child. I was looking to reclaim my living room and have the finished basement serve as a playroom for the kids.

Searching the net, I found several options.  I was attracted immediately to the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System.  Almost every review agreed that the product was top notch and the installation was a breeze.  However, I saw that not everyone agreed that the company’s sales practices were upfront and forthright.

I discovered an article on this site which had more than a handful of negative experiences especially concerning the sales tactics of Owens Corning salespeople.  I wondered if the content of these testimonials spoke of experiences which are par for the course when entering into the Owens Corning buying experience or if these were the stories of a disgruntled few.  I decided to do some of my own investigating.

First, I contacted the local Owens Corning Basement Finishing System sales office in Aston, PA and asked them to send a rep to my house.  The salesman, “Bob”, showed up at about three o’clock in the afternoon on a Tuesday.  Into the basement we went to take measurements and begin the question and answer piece to this appointment.

Bob took measurements and notes as he asked various questions:

How old is the home?

What are your plans for the space?

Have you ever experienced mold/flooding?

How did you hear about the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System?

After giving the basement a good once over, we sat in my kitchen to talk about the Owens Corning Basement Finishing System.  He took me through the presentation, features and benefits and finally we got to the price.  We did thoroughly discuss price.  Indeed, the first price quoted was not the price I ended up paying.  Bob used several sales tactics, called the boss and after about a half hour, we came to his final price.

In all I was able to save a few thousand dollars by haggling and negotiating with Bob, much in the same manner as I would when buying a car or anything with a similar price tag.  I can see how some people might be turned off by this type of haggling, but to me, it was no different than when I bought my Chevy.  Bob really wanted us to buy on the spot, but I didn’t.

After some discussion with my wife, we did choose to move forward with the project. I called Bob about two days later, got the price we had agreed to, and Bob came by the next day to sign the contracts.

It took the crew that OC sent out about six days to complete the job.  They were subcontracted to complete the job, but they were professional, courteous and very informative as they transformed our basement.

I have to admit I am happy with the results.  The basement is beautiful and now my family can start to use the space which had been unavailable to us beforehand.  I give the product and service a ten.  As far as the sales techniques are concerned, like I mentioned earlier, I found the buying experience to be no different than that of purchasing a car.  I like knowing that there is room to negotiate when it comes to something that is going to cost me tens of thousands of dollars.  It comforts me that a car salesperson does not say, “It’s 50 Grand.  Take it or leave it.”

Ultimately, I can say that my experience from start to finish was more than acceptable and I would recommend this company to anyone looking to improve their home.

This an interesting take on the experience with Owens Corning Basements.  Our story went more like this...

We first met Harry Dean when he was assigned by Owens Corning to build our Owens Corning basement.  From the very start, we sensed that Harry’s talents as a carpenter were way above anything we had seen and we have been involved with more than a few renovation projects.

Several people form Owens Corning had told us that Harry was meticulous in his work and we saw that to be the case, as nothing was completed in his mind until it was done in a way that pleased us all.

Harry was always open to suggestion, taking those suggestions and incorporating them into the basement plan.  His own ideas for refining the details of the basement were responsible for the excellent outcome.  Many nights, he would stay later in order to finish something and not leave it hanging until the next day.  He also would spend any time we requested in showing and explaining what was being done and how he was doing it.

Prior to signing the contract for the Owens Corning basement, we visited a couple of samples in the area.  Despite the great work we may have seen in those, the workmanship of our finished basement was, by far, superior.  Our punch list for the finished product had absolutely nothing on it.

We would hire Harry Dean again to work on any part of our house.  His combination of workmanship, professionalism, and integrity is very difficult to find these days.

I am speaking as one who has had the Owens Corning Basement System for over 3 years now. I saw this post and could not believe some of the negative things going around on joeuser. You are entitled of course, however, has anyone asked the opinions of those of us who have already had our basement finished? Almost everything I have seen (except the above posts)on this blog is referring to people who never installed the Owens Corning Basement system! OK! Move on!

Like two of my neighbors, you will save a few bucks using another basement finishing system, but in the long run...you should speak with them. They'll tell you.

We had Rob and Bob install our Owens Corning Basement. For anyone looking into doing their basement, I hope you will read the letter I wrote after the basement was completed (below). I believe my experience should help you decide as much....and more than anyone who has never had this done.

Dear Owens Corning,

I can't believe it's been exactly two weeks and my Owens Corning Basement is complete. Who would have ever thought I could have my basement finished with no mess and no hassle?

Rob and Bob did an exceptional job with the installation. They worked like a well-oiled machine. They arrived at our house on time each morning. If they were going to be late they would always give us a call to let us know. Rob and Bob would answer all of my questions each day and let me know what was next to be completed. My wife said that it didn't even seem like anyone was working in the house.

I have had three of my neighbors' come by to see the basement during the construction process. Two of them want to use Owens Corning Basement Finishing System for their basements and of course use Rob and Bob. The third would have liked to have had it done but his basement was already finished using drywall. (He's not too happy with his mold problem.)

Words cannot express the pure pleasure of my wife and me are experiencing with the completion of our Owens Corning basement. The entire process from the initial consultation to the completion of the project has been excellent.

Sincerely,

Dr. Jeffrey S.B.

PS As an added benefit, Rob and Bob saved my 60" Sony HDTV when the sump-pump gave out. If they were not there I would have had a TV under a foot of water.

We recently had our basement partially finished by three Owens Corning Basement Workers, Rick & Jim Lupinetti and their associate Tom. They were very hard workers & very professional. It was nice to have people who knew what they were doing and felt save enough to leave them alone in our home.

The Owens Corning Basement System has served us well. I did not go through the sales process--my husband did that and he likes to haggle so it was no big deal. My personal concern was the Owens Corning Basement product and the service we got.

We have already recommended them and Owens Corning Basement Finishing System to other people who maybe interested in your product and in the future if we decide to have more of our basement done, I hope we can have them again.

Sincerely,

Ike & Tracy Z.

The Owens Corning Basements person that we dealt with was Bob Kenyon.  What can I say?  The man has produced a beautiful room in our basement. His dependability and special ability have been second to none. The neatness and orderliness of his way of working have been superb and on top of that, he is simply a nice guy. We do not hesitate to recommend him to anyone.

He was one of the folks from the Philadelphia office too.  Great work.

Wow, I haven't really looked at this since I posted it.  I knew I was not crazy that the Owens Corning Basements were not a bad product, just that some folks were turned off by the sales process.

They are sales guys, folks!  They get paid when they sell.  What do you think they are going to do when you invite them into your home?  I made the anaolgy in my first piece to buying a car.  I think that the stress associated with a high dollar price tag only compounds the pre existing uneasiness that some people have during the buying process.  I still find it funny that no one is speaking ill of the Owens Corning product on this thread or even the original.

My husband and I were extremely pleased with the work completed recently by the Owens Corning Basement folks.

They were prompt every day, and if they were going to be delayed, always provided a courtesy call to notify us of changes in their routine.

When the Lumberton Township delayed arrival for the electrical re-inspection the estimated date of completion for the project was impacted. In order to complete the job on schedule, the men requested our permission to work on their weekends off and later into the evening.

Upon completion of each days work, they cleaned up and removed all trash generated as a result of the construction. When we went down to the basement to review the work each evening, the floor was free of debris and all work supplies were neatly stacked against the walls.

Job well done.
